The first thing you notice when you meet Daniel Coburn is the smile. At the end of June, that smile was on full display when Daniel became a first-time homeowner, purchasing an affordable house in Yarmouth.
At the closing, Director of Real Estate Gael Kelleher said, “He had the biggest smile on his face…He was so excited.”
“It was hard to concentrate on work that day,” laughed Daniel, who is a landscaper. “I didn’t want to go back to work after the closing because it was in the morning…I moved in that day after work. It was nice to be in my house which is weird to say.”
Born and raised on Cape Cod, the 29-year-old was able to remain here, in a place that he loves, with Housing Assistance’s help. It started last fall when he took our First-Time Homebuyer Class.
What did he learn? “Buying a home is a lot more expensive than it looks like,” he said.
As to becoming a homeowner, Daniel said, “it feels good…It is just a big step in life and feels like I’m moving on.”
Still he was undeterred and when Kelleher sent out an email in May that a 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom affordable home in Yarmouth was for sale, Daniel sent in an application. It had everything he wanted in a home – not far from his work, a basement, attached garage, and fenced-in backyard. “It looked perfect,” he said.
With two other applicants ahead of him – the first didn’t want the house and the second didn’t complete their paperwork in time – there was some uncertainty. That went away when Kelleher notified him that the home “was mine if I wanted it,” Daniel said.
“For such a young person, it is rare to see them have perfect credit, a good history of savings, and he was living at home with his parents,” Kelleher said.
Daniel credited Kelleher for turning his dream into a reality. “She was so helpful and so nice,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it without her.”
As to becoming a homeowner, Daniel said, “it feels good…It is just a big step in life and feels like I’m moving on.”
